Meet Chris

I’ve been designing experiences for over 27 years. I started at IBM in research where we investigated new ways to interact with computers. We played with whole-room computing, wearable computing, mobile computing, and edge computing.

From that, I moved into simplifying complex processes in various places at IBM. You can imagine how complex people at IBM can make things. Sometimes that is warranted, but usually it is not.

Fundamentally, design is about transformation. The projects outlined in this portfolio have been strongly transformed in one way or another; whether it is the process behind the tool, the technology supporting the tool, the user group using the tool, or decisions supported by the tool.

Frequently we need to start by designing the team, then focus on designing the process. Once we have this, only then can we focus on a useful application defined with well-thought-hills.

It is often best to start with an essential core of functionality then extend that functionality as you go. This is why a well thought out MVP is critical to the success of a project. Starting simple and adding strategically can lead to an application that is complex in capability without being complex in use.

I have learned that strategically adding function to a well-thought-out tool can provide the user information at the time it is needed while keeping extraneous information out of the way. This is much harder to do all at once than incrementally.

I have always been one who wants to know as much about as many things as I can. This restless attitude has led me to master many creative endeavors, such as design, cooking, brewing, gardening, business, engineering, coding, building, and economics.

Understanding how many things work and fit together helps me with everyday business problems at IBM. Having a background in many different ways life’s problems are solved helps provided a perspective on the different ways of approaching a problem. At its root, this is what design is all about, finding the best, most pleasing way to solve a problem.

I am a visionary design leader seeking to revolutionize user experiences and drive organizational success through innovative UX strategies. Aiming to leverage extensive experience in simplifying complex systems, establishing cohesive design standards, and leading high-performance teams to transform product portfolios. Committed to crafting intuitive, efficient, and delightful user interfaces that significantly boost productivity and user satisfaction across diverse platforms and industries.

Never settle for the first solution. Refine. Iterate. Improve. Always.
